LANs, WANs and the Internet

In its most basic form, a network is two or more computer systems which are linked together by some form of transmission medium that enables them to share information. It does not matter whether the network contains two or thousands of machines; the concept is essentially the same. A network will provide services to its users. These services may include access to shared files and folders, network printing and database applications.

To attempt to clarify the size and nature of individual networks, the industry has developed terms that broadly define the scope of the network.

Network Components

Despite the variations in size and design all networks have certain components in common. The key elements include the transmission medium, the clients and the servers (or hosts) that hold the shared data.

Transmission Media

Information must be transferred using some form of media. Typically, this takes the form of a cable but 'wireless' media using technologies such as infrared, microwave and radio can provide the same function.

Client

Network clients are the computers on the network that allow users to request the shared resources on the servers. Clients are often referred to as workstations.

Server

A server provides the shared resources on the network and allows clients to access this information. There are a number of different types of server:

File and Print Servers share their resources amongst client computers
Application Servers provide centralized processing - for example, database platforms such as SQL Server and Oracle
Messaging Servers provide email functionality
Network Servers provide network services, such as name resolution services, or authentication services
Terminal Servers - a special server which provides access to the network for terminal based systems

In many situations, one machine might provide some, or even all, of these functions. In larger networks, machines may be dedicated to a subset of these functions. However, they are all servers.

Host

Host is a TCP/IP networking term meaning any device communicating on the network (similar to node).

Node

A node is any device, such as a workstation, server or printer that can communicate on the network.

1.)Create ‘con’ folder on desktop :

• Can you create ‘con‘ folder on desktop or in any part of your hard disk..
• Okay then create it in your hard disk and show.
• Ha...not succeded a ?
• Hmm...the name ‘con’ is the reserved name
• Which no body can use it
• And even there are so many names which we cant create ,they are:
1.) CON---[console]
2.) PRN---[printer]
3.) NUL--- [nul1]
4.) COM1 TO COM9---[serial communicaton ports]
5.) LPT1 TO LPT9---[line printer ports]

• So we cant use them
• But by knowing this we can create
• But not the exact con folder,i am just adding the ASCII code after that name which cannot be visible
• Okay ..how to make that is ...
• Create a new folder by right click on desktop
• Rename it as a con and press “ALT+0160”
• Please remember that the numbers should be pressed from num pad only.
• Here the key ALT0160 is the ascii code of the character “ ” which cannot be visible
• Then hurry up create the folder...
• There is an other trick to create this folder ,but that is by using MS DOS .But the draw back is that if u create that folder than its impossible to delete the folder. so, Im not writing here

2.)Make your folders private:

•Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C, unless you have more than one drive on your computer).

•If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.

•Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.

•Double-click your user folder.

•Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.

•On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.

•To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.

•This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.

•When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its subfolders unless you make them private.

•You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS For information about converting your drive to NTFS

3.)Create your own invisible folder with out using any software :

* Here is the trick to create a folder which cannot be seen . To create that,u just follow the below steps

* Right click on desktop and create new folder

* After doing that windows will ask you for new name

* Then press back space to erase that name

* And just press ‘ALT0160’ from your kep board remember that you must press numbers from num pad only

4.)Increase your internet speed:

6.)Hybernate windows to get very fast booting:

You can use Hybernation.It is very useful and flexible.Using Hybernation you can continue your last work after power on your system once again (your running programs remain same) Also ur system will get very fast booting.

* To enable hybernation you must change a setting

* Just right click on desktop and click on properties

* Under the ‘screen saver’ tab.. press power options.

* On the power options dialog box select hibernate tab And enable Hibernation button.

* Now click ok and apply the change

* When ever you need to hibernate your computer you just click on start menu and select ”turn off computer” and long press and hold shift key,and then click on hybernate.

* Or the second way to activate is press “windows logo key +U+H” windows will automatically starts hibernating.

7.)Notepad magic:

• Between the quotes, you just type the address of the image where that exists

• If it asks for replace that file then click on “yes”

• And now open run by pressing winlogo+R button
• And type : attrib +s"F:\movies"
• (with quotes) then press OK
• Here “F:\movies” is the drive or folder name where you want to insert image.
• That Means in “F:\” drive, “movies” folder that image will insert.
• Now open that folder ,WOW....!! its better now.

10.)Folder lock Without using any Third party software :

5.Now bring all the files you want to hide in the 'Locker' folder. Double click on the batch file to lock the folder namely 'Locker'.

If you want to unlock your files,double click the batch file again and you would be prompted for password.

11.)Make your folders Hidden , And unsearchable w/o using any software:

You already know that File/Folder can be eaisly hidden by Right clicking on that ,and Ticking hidden Check Box and again clicking on OK .....

BUT, by doing that your File/Folder can be easily find by Showing hidden files and folders in folder options or even by searching technique....

BUT here I've a cool trick

which cannot be found either by searching or by any other way....interesting then follow these steps :

First create the folder which you want to make private Ex: foo and is created in
D:\ drive..
now open CMD prompt and type D: then you can go to D drive and now type

attrib +h +s foo "foo is the folder which you have created"

and see your folder will be hidden .....

and if you want to access you folder again

just open CMD prompt again and in D drive type: attrib -h -s foo

and your folder will be visible again.....WOW that's it....

Install Windows XP on Your Pre-Installed Windows Vista Computer

The question I am asked most often is "How do I install a dual-boot with Windows XP on my new Windows Vista computer?" The answer is that it's not that difficult, it's just very time consuming, and you need to own a copy of Windows XP. Note that you should not attempt this if you aren't ready to troubleshoot any problems that might occur. The first issue we encounter is that computers with pre-installed operating systems take up the entire drive. Luckily Microsoft included the Shrink volume feature in Vista, so we can easily shrink the Vista partition down to make room for XP. Open the Computer Management panel, which you can find under Administrative tools or by right-clicking the Computer item in the start menu and choosing Manage. Find the Disk Management item in the list and select that. Now we'll shrink our volume down by right-clicking on the main hard drive and choosing Shrink Volume. Now you can choose the size that you want to shrink, which really means you are choosing the size that you want your XP partition to be. Whatever you do, don't just use the default. I chose roughly 10gb by entering 10000 into the amount. The next step might be confusing, because we need to change the cd-rom drive that's invariably taking up D: at the moment, because we want to use D: for the Windows XP partition, but it's already taken by the cd-rom drive. If you skip this step than XP will install onto the E: drive, which isn't the end of the world, but it's not quite as tidy. Right-click on the cd-rom drive in the list and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths from the menu. Now we'll change the CD drive to use E: by selecting that in the drop-down. Now we can create a new partition for XP to live on and make sure that the drive letter is set the way we want. If you do not create a partition now the XP install will do so automatically, but it's easier and cleaner to do it this way. Right-click on the Unallocated free space area and then select New Simple Volume from the menu. Follow through the wizard and select whatever options you'd like, making sure to use D: as the drive letter. Now you will need to close out of disk management and reboot your computer. This is because we can't do the next step until we reboot. (you can try, but it won't work) So we've come back from rebooting… open up Computer from the start menu and then right-click on the D: drive and select properties. Give your partition a meaningful name like "XP". It would be wise to name the C: drive to "Vista" at this point as well. Now you'll want to pop your XP cd into the drive and boot off it. You may have to configure your BIOS to enable booting off the CD drive, or if your computer says something like "Hit Esc for boot menu" you might want to use that. Once you come to the screen where you can choose the partition to install on, then choose either the unpartitioned space or the new partition you created. Whatever you do, don't try and install onto your Vista partition! See how much cleaner it is now that we've labeled each partition distinctly? We'll assume XP is completely installed at this point, and you will have lost your ability to boot into Windows Vista, so we'll need to use the VistaBootPro utility to restore the Vista boot loader. Download and install VistaBootPro from vistabootpro.org During the install you'll be forced to installthe .NET2.0 framework. Open up VistaBootPRO and then click on the System Bootloader tab. Check the "Windows Vista Bootloader" and then "All Drives" radio buttons, and then click on the Install Bootloader button. At this point, the Windows Vista bootloader is installed and you'll only be able to boot into Vista, but we'll fix that. Instead of manually doing the work, we'll just click the Diagnostics menu item and then choose Run Diagnostics from the menu. This will scan your computer and then automatically fill in the XP version.. click on the "Manage OS Entries" tab and then click in the textbox for Rename OS Entry, and name it something useful like "Windows XP" or "The Windows That Works" Click the Apply Updates button and then reboot your computer… you should see your shiny new boot manager with both operating systems in the list! If you get an error saying "unable to find ntldr" when trying to boot XP, you'll need to do the following:

Find the hidden files ntldr and ntdetect.com in the root of your Vista drive and copy them to the root of your XP drive.
If you can't find the files there, you can find them in the \i386\ folder on your XP install cd

There's more information on this forum thread, thanks to nrv1013 This is a critical piece of information: Windows XP will be installed on the D: drive, even in Windows XP… so you'll need to keep that in mind when tweaking your system. You can share information between the drives, but I wouldn't recommend messing with the other operating system's partition too much… it might get angry and bite you. Or screw up your files.What I do recommend is that you store most of your files on a third drive shared between the operating systems… you could call that partition "Data". I'm going to write a number of followup articles dealing with all of the issues with dual-boot systems, so subscribe to the feed for updates. Install Windows XP in a Dual Boot with Pre-installed Windows Vista

Windows Vista came pre-installed on your new computer and now you want to create a dual boot with Windows XP for reasons of your own. Perhaps you have some older hardware that is not supported, or a program or game that won't run in Windows Vista.

NOTE: Check that Windows XP drivers for your system are available from the manufacturer of your system or from the motherboard manufacturer before attempting to install Windows XP. In particular, if you are using an SATA drive, make sure that you have Windows XP SATA Controller drivers available as they may be necessary for Windows XP setup to be able to "see" the partition on which you intend to install it. This is an important step especially with new Laptop and Notebook systems as well as OEM Desktop systems from manufacturers like Dell, HP and Gateway.

The fact that you do not have a bootable Windows Vista DVD with such systems, may also limit the ability to successfully create a dual boot with Windows XP.

USER BEWARE: CHECK WITH YOUR SYSTEM MANUFACTURER WHETHER OR NOT YOUR WARRANTY IS VOIDED IF YOU INSTALL AND DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS XP. MANY OF THE NEWER SYSTEMS ARE DESIGNED AND CONFIGURED TO ONLY RUN WINDOWS VISTA. HARDWARE ON YOUR SYSTEM MAY NOT BE DESIGNED TO RUN WINDOWS XP.

Preparation

The first thing one needs to do is to create a new partition on which to install Windows XP. This you can do by going to Computer>Right click>Manage>Disk Management.

Now right click on the blue primary hard drive at the bottom section of Disk Management and select "Shrink Volume". You can then choose how big the new partition that you want for Windows XP should be. It's suggested that you take into account that you may want to install programs and save data there, but also that you do not limit the amount of space available to Windows Vista unreasonably. Your total hard drive size will be your ultimate guide in selecting the amount of space you allocate to each operating system.

After the primary partition has been shrunk you will have Unallocated space visible in black. At this point it is recommended that you change the drive letter of your DVD drive by inserting a DVD or CD into your DVD drive and close Autoplay when that dialog box appears, right click the blue area of your DVD drive in Disk Management and select "Change drive letter and paths..." and click Change. From the drop down menu on the right of the dialog box that appears, select E and click OK, and then click Yes when you asked to confirm your action. Now remove the CD or DVD from your drive.

Changing the drive letters as above leaves your drive/partition structure in a less confusing form than having your hard drive partitions irregularly lettered and does not interfere with the functioning of your DVD drive in any way. You will now have drive letter D: available to use for the partition you will create for Windows XP.

It is now time to create your Windows XP partition from the unallocated space by right clicking the unallocated space and selecting "New simple volume". Follow the "New simple volume Wizard" and accept the defaults until you get to the point where you can insert "Volume label" and type XP there to make identification of your XP installation drive easy. At this point select "Quick Format" to speed the process and continue with the wizard to completion of this action.

Create a new partition

NB. At this point it is critical that you close Disk Management and restart your computer so that your changed disk/drive structure is taken fully into the Windows Vista configuration settings. After your system has restarted, you will again need to restart your system to finalize the setting up of your new partition.

Install Windows XP

Once you have completed the preparation, you can now insert your Windows XP setup disc and restart your system again to boot from your XP CD and install Windows XP in the normal manner.

Create a Vista Dual Boot Menu

At this point you will have lost your ability to boot into Windows Vista for the time being and the next stage of this excercise is devoted restoring a dual boot to both Windows Vista and Windows XP.

Once you have your XP installation and drivers all installed, download and install VistaBootPRO. Make sure you follow the prompt to install .Net Framework 2.00 as VistaBootPRO will not run without it.

Open VistaBootPRO, ignore the prompt to backup your BCD. Go to the System Bootloader tab, select "Windows Vista Bootloader" in the first section and "All Drives" in the second section and then click Install Bootloader . Next, go to the Diagnostics item on the menu bar and select "Run Diagnostics". VistaBootPRO will default back to the Manage OS Entries page and you will see that you now have entries there for "Earlier versions of Windows" as well as "Microsoft Windows Vista".

Restart your system and select the operating system you would like to boot to.

Folder Lock without any Software

Many people have been looking for a way to lock folders without the use of any alternative software. So, here you go.

Here is the easy method to lack the folders without using a software.
Open Notepad and copy the below code and save as locker.bat. Please don't forget to change your password in the code it's shown the place where to type your password.
Now double click on locker .bat
First time start, it will create folder with Locker automatically for u. After creation of the Locker folder, place the contents u want to lock inside the Locker Folder and run locker.bat again. The Locker folder disappears from the window. To make the folder available again, double click the locker.bat and enter the password. And you get your folder back!

Remove Shortcut Arrows from Desktop Icon:

1. Start regedit.
2. Navigate to the following registry value HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -- > lnkfile
3. Delete the IsShortcut registry value in the right pane.

How To Speed Up your BroadBand Speed

I just found this article which discusses important tips to significantly speed up your internet access through BSNL Dataone broadband connection / most other BroadBand connections like Reliance or Tata Indicom or Sify Broadband .

Setting DNS For Your Connection
One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS servers they provide by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes they fail to respond. I noticed that I am starting to spend a significant amount of time in DNS resolution with Dataone connection, often it is larger than the time it takes to actually get the reponse. Here is a simple solution to significantly speed up your DNS resolution.

Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS server address fields, specify the following DNS server addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.

This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL Dataone’s DNS servers.

Note: The service is provided by OpenDNS.

Saving your Bandwidth
Firefox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash content by default, thereby significantly speeding up browsing experience. You can click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall experience.

Setting TCP Parameters
You can try to increase your broadband bandwidth tweaking the TCP/IP parameters. The process is simplified by using TCPOptimizer, a free tool. It helped me a lot but your mileage may vary

* There you will find a file named HOSTS

* Click on the file and press SHIFT and now right click on it .

* From the right click menu select Open with .

* Now, select Notepad to open the file from the list !

* Now, in the file under the line 127.0.0.1 localhost add another line as 127.0.0.2 www.xyz.com.

* Now, File>>Save !

Now, open your web browser and try openning www.xyz.com , it will not load !

To unblock sites just do the opposite !
